The Staffing Shortage
The workshops at Rijks are now in trouble.
One after another, the technicians who have been supporting artists’ projects left the job.
Some left as they became tired of endless requests from the artists (they called it ‘desire’ not requests); others followed them as a result of trying to run the workshop with less number of staffs. They were worn down. There were also some staffs who left simply because it was the end of their contract. In any case, staffs left their jobs one after another, and now Rijks is facing a problem – the staffing shortage.
This will be a serious problem for everyone as it gets closer to the open studio – the workshops will face the busiest time of the year as the artists begin to work like mad (and usually Dutch people are rather relaxed, you know).
But maybe... it is a good opportunity for us to use our brain and come up with ways of doing things... or to think once again whether what we are trying to do is really necessary. As the saying goes ‘Do as the Romans do,’ we must try and be creative. And to those technicians who supported us... I would like to say a big thank you...!
